Those
of us that have seen "Take Off with T-Bag" will need no
introduction to this prop. Nibbles was a small, cute, hairy alien
described by T-Bag as a "hippy tennis ball". He latched
onto Tow Ling's spacesuit when he and T-Shirt are sent out on a
space walk by T-Bad. Unfortunately, Nibbles has an insatiable appetite
for metal, and will eat any metal that he can find, including the
hull of a spaceship. As such, he is regarded as a most dangerous
pest. Even more unfortunate, is that when T-Bag tries to get rid
of Nibbles with a bomb, the resulting fragments of Nibbles each
grow into a new baby Nibbles.
An
interesting bit of trivia, is that this episode is a nod to the
original series of Star Trek, that featured an episode called "Trouble
with Tribbles". Tribbles were little cute, furry aliens that
purred when stroked. The purring of the Tribbles produced soothing
effect on the person doing the stroking, so they became very popular
on the Enterprise. Unfortunately, they multiplied at an alarming
rate, and soon took over everything.
The
episode also tips a wink at the Alien films and also to Red Dwarf.
The
prop that I photographed was simply a pingpong ball covered in long
synthetic fur with an embroidered smile and a pair of small blue
glass eyes. I am not sure, but I think that it is one of the Nibbles
that we see stuck to Tow Ling as he stuffs them all into the Trash
Zapper.
